Rebecca Marr, a co-director of the Blankenship Memorial project, called the words selected for the memorial a kind of prayer. The selection reads:Bless you who shields me fromthe reckless hands of tragedy for you are shepherd to my freedomand protectorate to my dreams.Thank you, MichaelMichael Blankenship was fatally shot Feb. 10, and was the first University Police officer ever killed in the line of duty.Marr, a junior majoring in zoology, said she was really touched by the fact that the author was an anonymous student. “It’s like it’s coming from all the students instead of one in particular,” she said.University Police Chief Ron Michalec said the quotation selected was “wonderful, very fitting and nicely phrased.”He called it a fantastic tribute to Blankenship and said the other officers greatly appreciated the students’ efforts. The words selected for the project were released in a news conference on Thursday, which was National Police Memorial Day. This quotation was selected early last week by Marr and co-director Bill Walker, a senior majoring in business, from roughly 10 original student quotations, she said. The memorial is scheduled to be dedicated during Welcome Week in September, in front of the new police department, named Michael Blankenship Hall at 2090 Kenny Road. It has yet to be decided if the memorial will be a fountain, statue or another type of commemorative. The memorial project has raised nearly $2,000, Marr said, with a goal of $5,000. USG has donated $500 and a group of landscape architecture students gave $80. Private donations have not made up a large part of the funds, she said.
